Does the thumbnail still work when it gets small?

Add an image and title. Compare home, search and suggested video views, then use squint and grayscale tests to see whether the subject still holds.

The thumbnail and title work as a pair.

The image does not need to repeat the entire title. It can show the person, object or change while the title explains why the video is worth the time.

The tool places the same material at several sizes, exposing text that only reads when large or a subject that disappears beside other videos.

The squint test removes detail.

Heavy blur approximates the speed of scanning a feed. If subject, contrast and focal point remain visible, the image has a clearer foundation. Grayscale exposes colours that differ in hue but have almost the same brightness.

This tests visual clarity, not click-through rate. Real performance also depends on topic, audience, title and the videos shown around yours.
