A physical product can look simpler than a course: image, price and buy button. The difference appears after purchase. A file can be delivered again at almost no cost. An item can sell out, enter the wrong parcel, come back or need replacement.

Idun Blue has physical products as an optional feature, switched off from the start and deliberately narrow: an offer can contain one selectable physical product together with digital access, paid by card in one go. It suits a workbook or kit that belongs with a course. It is not a full shop.

This is the requirements list worth checking against any platform before you sell physical goods through it.

Product data someone can pick from

Every sellable variant needs a stable identity, commonly a SKU. Size, colour and material cannot live only in the product title; they need to travel with the order line so the correct item can be picked, returned and counted.

Minimum requirements include:

  • product and variant with their own SKU,
  • weight and dimensions when shipping uses them,
  • price and tax treatment for the sales market,
  • images and unambiguous variant text,
  • stock state and back-order rule,
  • a persistent link between order line and delivered item.

Stock must be reserved at the right moment

Showing “one left” is not enough. The system needs a rule for reservation: when checkout opens, when payment is authorised or when the order is confirmed. Reservations that never expire create false scarcity. Reservations made too late can sell the same final item twice.

Test two simultaneous purchases of the last unit. That reveals more than a long feature list.

Shipping is part of the price and promise

Checkout needs to know where you ship, which services are available, what they cost and which items cannot share a parcel. After purchase you need pick status, shipment ID, tracking and a clear path for uncollected parcels.

A carrier integration should be replaceable without erasing the order history. Store carrier, service, shipment ID and tracking URL on the order, not only in the carrier’s system.

Return, cancellation and faulty goods are different flows

For a Swedish company selling at a distance, Konsumentverket states a general 14-day cancellation right for consumers, with exceptions for some goods. Since 19 June 2026, relevant agreements entered through a website or app also require a clear cancellation function on that interface with an acknowledgement. Read Konsumentverket’s current business guidance and check the rules for your products and markets.

The tool needs to distinguish:

  • cancellation without a fault in the item,
  • complaint about faulty goods,
  • exchange for another variant,
  • an uncollected parcel returned to sender,
  • full or partial refund.

Each path changes stock, payment, customer communication and accounting evidence differently.

When is a creator platform ready for physical goods?

Not when it can create a product. It is ready when a purchase can move through payment, reservation, picking, shipping, cancellation or return, refund and reconciliation without losing the stock position or customer history.

Within the narrow case above, Idun keeps stock, the delivery address and the order together in Studio. If you sell a range of goods, several items per order or need integrated shipping, use an established commerce and shipping workflow for the physical side and let Idun handle the digital parts.
