A platform comparison becomes useful only when it starts with the business you intend to run. A long feature matrix can give equal weight to a decorative template and the ability to export your customer data. Those are not equally consequential.

Use one real offer as the test case. If you plan to sell a six-week cohort with weekly feedback, do not evaluate platforms by building a passive video library. If you plan to run a paid community, test moderation, notifications and cancelling a subscription — not just the course editor.

Write the operating brief first

Before opening any pricing page, write one page that answers:

  • What will a customer buy first: a course, membership, coaching package or download?
  • Is delivery self-paced, scheduled or recurring?
  • Which payment structures are necessary: one-off, instalments or subscription?
  • How will a prospect reach the checkout?
  • What must happen after payment?
  • Who besides you needs access to the admin area?
  • Which records must be exportable if you move?

Separate needed now, likely within twelve months and possibly later. A roadmap item is not a current capability, whether it appears on a vendor’s roadmap or yours.

Run the same end-to-end test on every candidate

Create a small but complete version of the offer on each shortlisted platform:

  1. Build one module with text, video and a downloadable file.
  2. Create the product and its price.
  3. Complete a test purchase using the vendor’s documented test mode.
  4. Open the receipt and welcome email.
  5. Sign in as the learner on a phone.
  6. Watch the lesson, mark progress and ask for help.
  7. Issue a test refund or cancel the test subscription.
  8. Export the learner, product and transaction records.

Record friction as you go. “Supports courses” tells you very little; “a learner can resume the correct lesson on mobile after signing in” is testable.

Score the risks, not the brochure

Give each area a score from 0 to 3 and write one sentence of evidence.

AreaWhat to verify
Offer fitThe exact content, access rules and payment model you need
Learner experienceMobile navigation, captions, progress, accessibility and support path
Sales flowPages, forms, checkout, receipts, taxes and refunds
CommunicationConsent records, broadcasts, automations and unsubscribe handling
OperationsRoles, analytics, support workflow and failed-payment handling
PortabilityExport formats for contacts, content, orders and subscriptions
CostRequired plan, add-ons, transaction fees and payment processing at expected scale

Weight any deal-breaker twice. If accessibility or data residency is a contractual requirement, a beautiful page builder cannot compensate for failing it.

Calculate the complete cost

Use the plan you would need, not the lowest number in the pricing header. Include the platform subscription, required add-ons, platform transaction fees, separate payment processing, paid seats, usage limits and the time needed to maintain integrations.

Vendor prices and limits change. Save the pricing page or invoice date used in your decision and review it before signing an annual agreement. Our creator-tool cost calculator is designed for this audit.

Ask the exit questions before you enter

A vendor may offer “exports” without exporting everything needed to reconstruct the business. Ask what happens to original uploads, lesson structure, learner progress, contact fields, consent history, community posts, invoices, refunds, active subscriptions, custom domains and inbound links.

Some data cannot be transferred between payment systems for security or contractual reasons. Treat any claim that subscriptions can “just be moved” as something to verify with both providers in writing.

Make the decision reversible

Keep original media outside the platform. Maintain a current export of contacts and record where consent came from. Use your own domain for public links. Document automations in plain language. These practices reduce migration risk regardless of which product you choose.

Idun Blue is currently in internal beta. The live product combines courses, community, pages, email, payments and analytics, but it is not yet open for self-serve registration. Join the waitlist if you want to be considered for the first external creator onboarding; no subscription is sold or charged during the internal beta.
